CHEST 2019: A Year at a Glance

CHEST is the global leader in advancing best patient outcomes through innovative chest medicine education, clinical research, and team-based care.

Through your help, CHEST is able to champion the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chest diseases. With your support, CHEST has consistently provided clinicians with the educational resources and support needed to succeed in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine.

In 2019, the CHEST community had more than 18,000 members working together to advance patient care in clinical chest medicine, including 3,400 international members. This global reach allows clinicians to collaborate on innovative research in chest medicine, allowing for the best patient outcomes.

CHEST held its first Lung Cancer Summit in July 2019. This summit connected clinicians, educators, scientists, advocacy groups, payers, and government entities. Relationships were strengthened during this meeting because sessions focused on improving communication across the care team and understanding the clinical needs in the field.

In 2019, CHEST continued to provide physicians with opportunities to learn from expert faculty in areas like critical care, pulmonary, and sleep medicine, notably in thoracic ultrasound and mechanical ventilation, through live learning, board review, and the annual meeting. All of these learning events offer physicians1 opportunities to earn CME credit and ABIM MOC points, allowing those who attend events to maximize their time, money, and energy. Accreditation opportunities from the comfort of your home continue to be available through the e-Learning Library and the CHEST SEEK™ Library subscriptions.

With the addition of Peter J. Mazzone, MD, MPH, FCCP, as the Editor in Chief of the CHEST® journal, the journal was restructured in 2019 into nine sections based on medicine subspecialty. With each section being overseen by a leader, emphasis was placed on the varying needs of clinicians.

“Learning never stops and CHEST offers so much! It is always stimulating and challenging, and it allows the opportunity to ask the experts in the field burning questions faced in our real world lives. [It is] always invaluable learning, scope, and depth,” explains CHEST Annual Meeting 2019 attendee Sachin J. Hansalia, MD.

CHEST Foundation has been steadfast in providing funding to early-career physicians through travel grants aimed at assisting research and community service grant winners in attending the CHEST Annual Meeting. Grants are also given out each year for research in respiratory health, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, and severe asthma, among many others.

Beyond awarding deserving clinicians with funding, CHEST Foundation is dedicated to helping you help patients and caregivers better understand their conditions and available treatment options through patient empowerment, access, and research.

“We will continue to engage all members of the health-care team, provide opportunities for leadership and engagement, and mentor future leaders—all in the spirit of advancing chest medicine and optimizing patient care,” says CHEST President Stephanie M. Levine, MD, FCCP.

It is because of the work you do and the support you provide CHEST that we are able to grow a community of engaged clinicians aimed at improving clinical chest medicine. We thank you for your dedication and contributions to chest medicine.
